Memphis Jones Brings His Hometown to Collingwood for the Elvis Festival

Memphis Jones is coming to Collingwood this week for a string of shows. Tonight, on Wednesday, he’ll be performing for the Collingwood Jazz and Blues Society at the train station museum, as part of their summer outdoor series.  Tomorrow, Thursday, he’ll be at the Harbour Street Fish Bar.  From Friday through Sunday, he’ll be popping up everywhere at the downtown Elvis Festival, and on Saturday afternoon he’ll playing at the Village at Blue Mountain.  Most of these gigs he’ll be playing with his rockabilly trio but he will also be acting as MC, telling stories and hosting a street party.

Memphis Jones is a rocking guitar player who does justice to the Memphis classics (think Sun Records) he covers but, more than that, he is active as an inspirational keynote speaker, recognized as a Delta music historian, and he travels the world as an unofficial ambassador for Memphis.  He plays regularly at B.B. Kings on Beale Street in Memphis and to many tourists, he is the best representative of that city, with his stories and songs.  Lisa Marie Presley calls him “the best thing that’s happened to Memphis in a long time.”

A visitor to B.B. Kings wrote in an Internet review: “We were looking for somewhere to get barbeque and live music, and ended up at BB King’s. The BBQ ribs and chicken (and beer) were excellent, and the show put on by Memphis Jones was incredible. Not only are these guys incredibly musically, MJ tells the stories behind the songs – of the performers, songwriters, and studio gurus that made the Memphis sound famous. Stories that I, as a 30+ year musician, was not aware of.”

Memphis Jones describes himself as “a moment-manufacturer, a culture-interpreter, a dot-connector and a song & dance man. I’m really just an encourager and I’m a good one!”

He and his band have become a regular part of the Collingwood Elvis Festival, noting on his website:  “Can’t get enough of you, Collingwood!  Once again, Collingwood, Ontario, you were gracious hosts to my family and me and my trio. I am honored to be a part of your fantastic festival each year and enjoy every minute I get to spend in that beautiful town! Bringing my Beale Street-based but INTERNATIONAL Memphis Music Review made 2016 extra special for me. My trio was able to perform on three of your stages and we can’t wait to do it all over again!”

Normally it wouldn’t be a good idea for a performer to book so many gigs together within shouting distance of each other in a market this size.  But Memphis Jones is not just any performer.  He’s a multi-faceted entertainer and inspiration.  He’s even a pastor.

Chances are if someone catches him at one of these shows, they will want to make a point of seeing him again while he’s in the area.
