All Female Lineup At This Week’s Summer Concert in Meaford

The third in Meaford’s Summer Concert Series will take place this Friday, August 4th at the Market Square beside Meaford Hall.  It will be  a full night, and an all-female cast with an exciting lineup of local and visiting talent starting at 7 pm.  As always, the concert is free.

The headliner this week is the impressive pianist and singer Jenie Thai with her trio.  She visited Meaford last winter, playing a solo show to a full house at The Red Door.  She plays energetic  blues and boogie woogie and has a beautiful voice that can range from a raunchy shout to a soaring soprano.  Her original songs, which may find a place in the set, have a unique beauty all their own, full of longing and evocative melodies.

One of the opening acts will be Hunnay, featuring the vocal harmonies of Laura Somers and Karen A. Witt.  The other will be Amanda Dorey, whose authentic country voice is very popular among local fans.  Amanda will also be performing at The Leeky Canoe across the street when she is finished at the main concert stage.

The Meaford Summer Concert Series is evolving into what is almost a festival of great live music, specifically programmed to bring the community together on a summer Friday night.  The main stage performances will be bookmarked by live performances before and afterwards.  As mentioned, Amanda Dorey will keep the party going at The Leeky afterward and, before the main stage show, playing from five to seven on the patio at The Red Door, will be the amazing violin talent Victoria Yeh.  Victoria has played often in Meaford in the past year and her impressive talent has built a local following, and now she has a local connection as well, having bought property here.

Showcasing youth talent has always been an integral part of the Meaford Summer Concert Series, and it is always inspiring to see the level of talent among our young local performers. This Friday will introduce Sequoia Koop to open the show on the main stage, and as an extra bonus, Eden Young will be back.  She performed at the initial concert of this summer’s series, but technical difficulties obscured her talent.  There was a long delay at that concert and when the sound was finally sorted out Eden had time for just one song, but it displayed a beautiful vocal talent and many people were disappointed that they couldn’t hear more.  Now that the sound problems have been permanently corrected, promoter Chris Scerri thought it was only fair to the audience to give them another chance to hear Eden.

“I wanted to give Eden another opportunity to showcase her talent alongside some great female performers,” he said, “We had some technical challenges the first time around and she did not get to perform to her full capability.”

It promises to be a very full night of very special talents, possibly the best yet in what has been a remarkable concert series.

As always the concert is free, and you are encouraged to bring a camp chair to relax and enjoy the entire show.  Donations of non-perishable food items for Golden Town Outreach are also gratefully accepted.  In keeping with the all-female theme, this concert will be focused on raising awareness and funds for My Friend’s House, a women’s shelter located in Collingwood also serving Meaford.  My Friend’s House provides shelter, practical support and counselling to abused women and their children in the Georgian Triangle, with programs that include shelter where counsellors are available to assist women and their children 24 hrs a day, a 24-hour Confidential Crisis Line staffed by qualified counsellors to deal with immediate situations, provide support and information on options,  an Outreach Program offering individual/group counselling to help deal with the emotional impact of abuse on women’s lives, a Transition Program providing practical support to women after they leave, support groups and a child support program.

Incorporating this theme into the night’s agenda ensures that the Meaford Summer Concert Series will not only provide an exciting night of entertainment but will perform a valuable function in building our community.

Don’t miss it!
