Craig Ashton Brings His Gift To Meaford

This Saturday at 8 p.m., Craig Ashton brings a special show to Meaford Hall when, joined by members of the Canadian Opera Company, he presents an evening of popular opera and Broadway selections.

Craig inherited his father’s beautiful tenor voice and began his career with the Canadian Opera Company at the age of twenty-four as a finalist in the Young Mozart Singers Competition, and he was accepted into the COC Ensemble Studio under the direction of the late Richard Bradshaw.  In addition to leading operatic roles, he has triumphed in musical theatre including roles in Hal Prince’s The Phantom of The Opera and Show Boat, and he was a member of the original Canadian Tenors.  Insight magazine acclaimed his “incredible range and fantastic big voice” and The Nanaimo Daily News applauded him for his “technical perfection and passion”.

After years of touring and eleven years with the Canadian Opera Company, Craig came to this area with his partner to open a bed in breakfast in Craigleith.  His arrival was noticed by Erica Angus, executive director of Theatre Collingwood, and within months she contacted him asking him to sing at a cabaret show.  That event met with such acclaim that the owner of the Gayety Theatre Sid Dickinson asked him to put together a special show.  He jumped at the opportunity of being a producer and the result was From Opera To Broadway, a collection of popular solos and duets from some of the most recognizable operas to music theatre classics. He recruited colleagues from the Canadian Opera Company to create a special sampler performance of songs with wide appeal.

In an article published at the time in the Collingwood Enterprise Bulletin, Craig’s partner Guy Laporte said, “This is really opera that people will tap their toes to and go ‘Oh my god, I know that song’ and really connect with the music. I think the audience will enjoy themselves.”  Selections will include music from Phantom of the Opera, Les Misérables, West Side Story, Verdi’s La Traviata, Bizet’s Carmen and The Pearl Fishers, Puccini’s Turandot, and many more musical gems.

The Collingwood show, a year ago, was a great success and now Craig has brought it to Meaford.  What could be more fitting than opera at The Opera House?

Although general seating tickets are available for the concert which begins at 8 p.m., Andrew’s Roots is making it even better with the opportunity to enjoy a dinner and show combination, with a three-course Chefs Choice dinner. Tickets are available through Meaford Hall, reservations are required for seating between 5 pm and 5:30, all tickets, including dinner are purchased through the Meaford Hall box office. Dinner ticket includes tax, and is plus gratuity and beverages.  Tickets are $45 for show only and $90 for the dinner & show.

Live music in Meaford is expanding on all fronts and in all genres and it is especially exciting that, with this show, local fans can enjoy the thrill hearing professionals perform real opera.
