Sunday Night Soul at The Leeky

As the Meaford International Film Festival wraps up this Sunday night, the Leeky Canoe extends the party with a soulful offering from Virgil Scott and Joe Huron, two respected veterans of the Canadian Music Scene that have played with everybody through the years.

Virgil Scott has been playing since he put together his first band in 1968 and has made a living in music for four decades by applying his talents to a variety of opportunities.  His soulful delivery makes him a natural covering songs from Van Morrison to Motown.  He’s played in musical theatre productions, contributed to studio sessions for musicians like David Clayton Thomas, added oomph to commercial jingles and thrilled audiences from casinos to festivals, bistros and nightclubs to corporate events with shows he’s created that include The Virgil Scott Motown Review, The Three Dads built around vocal harmonies with Jay Speziale and Glynn Stevens, and a walk down memory lane for Baby Boomers with a show he called Songs My Sister Played.  These days when he’s not touring he makes his home base The Beacon in Wasaga Beach.  With a lifetime of impressive musical friends to choose from he often calls on one of them to form a duo for smaller gigs.  For this trip to Meaford he’s invited along  jazz guitarist Joe Huron.

Having hosted the Sunday Afternoon Jazz gig at Fitzy’s Crabshack in downtown Barrie Joe Huron has shared the stage with the best jazz players of every stripe from around the region.  Combining his chops with Virgil’s chameleon musicianship opens up the opportunity for some great jazz standards and R & B as well as soul.
